The Fan-Favorite Pothos and its Close Relatives

Pothos are the life of the indoor plant party—easygoing, adaptable, and always looking good. Let's explore some of the coolest pothos varieties and how to keep them happy.

Devil's Ivy (Epipremnum aureum)

Appearance: Heart-shaped leaves with vibrant green and yellow variegation.

Growth: Fast-growing and ready to conquer your living room. Perfect for hanging baskets or climbing trellises. They'll grow bigger leaves if you give them a support pole!

Light: Bright, indirect light is best, but it’s not picky. You could put it in the sewers and it would probably still survive, it will just get more green and less yellow though.

Water: If you like routine - water once a week in summer, once a fortnight in winter. Or if you're like me and can't stick to a schedule to save your life - just poke your finger into the soil and if it's dry beyond your second knuckle, give it some water.

Humidity: Moderate humidity, chuck it in the bathroom while you're having a shower if you want to pamper your pothos.

Temperature: Happy between 15-30°C, so as long as you don't put it in the oven or leave it in the snow it'll probably be fine.

Fertiliser: Not necessary, it'll grow like crazy anyway BUT if you really want to give it a boost, any indoor plant food will do the trick. We like the one's from The Plant Runner and We The Wild

Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Marble Queen')

Appearance: White and green marbled leaves. She’s the elegant one at the plant party.

Growth: Slightly slower but worth the wait for those gorgeous leaves.

Light: Needs bright, indirect light to keep her colors. Too little light, and she might lose her white variegation.

Water: Keep the soil moist but not swampy. The queen prefers her hydration just right. Same rules as the Devil's Ivy but maybe stick your finger in her a little more often.

Humidity: Higher humidity is her thing. A little extra pampering never hurt. She will survive without it but a humidifier is a great investment for all of your indoor plants if you live in a dry climate.

Temperature: Prefers a slightly warmer temperature, try to keep it above 15°C at all times. In saying that, our marble queen has survived a Melbourne winter so she's not going to drop dead on a colder day, she may just not push out as much growth.

Fertiliser: Monthly feeding during growing season to boost her luscious leaves.

N'Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'N'Joy')

Appearance: Cream-colored leaves with green patches, usually around the edges. The fun-sized bundle of joy.

Growth: Compact and bushy, perfect for small spaces.

Light: Bright, indirect light. Too much sun and N'Joy might get a sunburn.

Water: Pretty much the same as above, just don't overwater! P.S. Overwatering refers to watering your plants too often NOT too much at once (as long as your pots have drainage).

Humidity: Loves moderate to high humidity.

Temperature: 15-30°C.

Fertiliser: Diluted balanced fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. A little treat goes a long way.

Silver Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus)

Appearance: Velvety curved leaves with silver speckles. The stylish, smooth operator.

Growth: Moderate growth rate. This one likes to take its time to look good.

Light: Bright, indirect light.

Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Good drainage is a must.

Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity. Regular misting is like a refreshing drink.

Temperature: 15-30°C. Cozy and comfortable.

Fertiliser: Balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Keeps the glam factor high.

Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Neon')

Appearance: Neon-green leaves. This plant is the life of the party.

Growth: Fast-growing and ready to show off.

Light: Bright, indirect light to keep that neon glow. Can tolerate lower light but may lose some pizzazz.

Water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Neon Pothos likes to stay fresh.

Humidity: Average household humidity is fine, but occasional misting keeps it glowing.

Temperature: 15-30°C.

Fertiliser: Balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. An energy boost for your vibrant friend.

General Pothos Care Tips

Pruning: Trim regularly for size control and bushier growth. Think of it as a regular haircut.

Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years. Give them space to spread their roots.

Pests: Watch for common pests like spider mites and mealybugs. Quick treatment keeps the jungle happy.

With these tips, your pothos plants will thrive and bring a touch of green joy to your home. Happy planting!
